Undersea Cable Damage Disrupts Internet Services in Ghana and West Africa, MTN Assures Customers of Swift Restoration

Accra, Ghana  MTN Ghana has announced that damage to undersea fibre-optic cables off the coast of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, has disrupted internet connectivity and data services in Ghana and several countries across the West African sub-region.

The telecommunications giant disclosed the development in a customer notice issued on June 27, explaining that the cuts to the subsea cable infrastructure have affected the international connectivity routes that support internet traffic across the region. The incident has resulted in intermittent internet services, slower connection speeds and disruptions to data-dependent services for millions of customers.

According to MTN Ghana, the outage is linked to damage on critical undersea communication cables that serve as the backbone of international internet connectivity. These fibre-optic networks are essential for enabling seamless digital communication, supporting businesses, financial transactions, cloud computing, online education, streaming services and other internet-based activities.

The disruption is expected to affect both individual users and organisations that rely heavily on stable internet connectivity for their daily operations. Financial institutions, e-commerce platforms, digital service providers, corporate organisations and cloud-based enterprises may experience service interruptions until the fault is fully resolved.

In its statement, MTN Ghana assured customers that it is working closely with its international partners and technical teams to restore normal services as quickly as possible.

We are actively engaging our international partners to resolve the issue as soon as possible,” the company stated.

The incident once again highlights the strategic importance of undersea cable infrastructure to Africa’s growing digital economy. It also underscores the need for greater investment in network resilience, redundancy and alternative connectivity routes to minimise the impact of future disruptions on businesses and consumers.

MTN Ghana expressed regret over the inconvenience caused and thanked customers for their patience and understanding. The company reaffirmed its commitment to keeping subscribers updated while restoration efforts continue, assuring customers that every effort is being made to restore full internet and data services at the earliest possible opportunity.
