No Second Chance’ – Jordan Ayew Rallies Black Stars Ahead of Historic World Cup Clash Against Colombia

‘No Second Chance’ – Jordan Ayew Rallies Black Stars Ahead of Historic World Cup Clash Against Colombia

Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has delivered a strong message of determination and resilience to his teammates ahead of Ghana’s crucial FIFA World Cup Round of 32 encounter against Colombia, insisting that the team must quickly move on from their disappointing defeat to Croatia because the knockout stage offers “no second chance.”

Despite suffering a 2-1 loss to Croatia in their final Group L match on Saturday at the Philadelphia Stadium, Ghana had already secured qualification to the knockout phase following Spain’s 1-0 victory over Uruguay a day earlier. The result meant the Black Stars finished third in the group, setting up a historic first-ever World Cup meeting with the unbeaten Colombians.

Although qualification had already been confirmed, Ayew admitted the team had hoped to end the group stage on a winning note to maintain momentum heading into the knockout rounds. However, the experienced captain believes the defeat should serve as a valuable lesson rather than a setback.

“It was a World Cup game, and you always want to win every match to keep the positivity within the team. The result has not affected our mood, and we will learn from our mistakes,” Ayew said after the match.

Croatia opened the scoring in the 31st minute through Petar Sucic, whose powerful low strike from outside the penalty area beat goalkeeper Benjamin Asare. Ghana struggled to find their rhythm in the opening half but showed greater urgency after the break.

The Black Stars were rewarded in the 73rd minute when substitute Derrick Luckassen restored parity, calmly finishing from close range after connecting with an expertly delivered Ernest Nuamah free-kick. The goal was briefly reviewed by VAR before being awarded, sparking celebrations among the Ghanaian players and supporters.

However, Ghana’s joy proved short-lived. Just ten minutes later, Croatian legend Luka Modric, at the age of 40, produced another moment of brilliance, delivering a pinpoint corner that Nikola Vlasic headed into the net to restore Croatia’s lead. The assist saw Modric become the oldest player in FIFA World Cup history to register an assist.

Reflecting on the defeat, Ayew acknowledged that Ghana’s performance fell below expectations, particularly in possession, but stressed that the team’s attention has already shifted to the bigger challenge ahead.

“We stay positive. On to the next game. It was a weird game today. We were a bit sloppy in possession, and they capitalised on our mistake. The most important thing is for us to focus on the next game because it’s either you stay or you go home,” he stated.

The Ghana captain, who made his 123rd international appearance and his 11th FIFA World Cup appearance across three tournaments, has already begun preparing the team mentally for the high-stakes encounter against Colombia.

According to Ayew, the knockout phase demands complete concentration, discipline and belief, with no room for mistakes.

“I have told the guys that we need to stay focused and do our best because the next game will be different. There is no second chance,” he emphasized.

Colombia head into the Round of 32 full of confidence after finishing top of Group K with seven points from three matches, remaining unbeaten throughout the group stage. Their impressive form presents one of Ghana’s toughest tests of the tournament, but the Black Stars will be hoping to rise to the occasion and keep their World Cup dream alive.

Saturday’s showdown will also be a historic occasion, marking the first competitive meeting between Ghana and Colombia at any level. The match is scheduled to kick off at 01:30 GMT on Saturday, July 4, and represents Ghana’s first FIFA World Cup knockout match since the unforgettable quarter-final clash against Uruguay at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.

With everything on the line, the Black Stars know that only victory will keep their World Cup journey alive. As Jordan Ayew has reminded his teammates, the knockout stage is unforgiving, there are no second chances.
