Ilyas Ansah Declines Ghana Call-Up for 2026 World Cup, Commits to Germany U21 Pathway
Germany-born forward of Ghanaian heritage, Ilyas Ansah, has officially declined the opportunity to represent Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, delivering a significant development for the Black Stars ahead of the global tournament set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The 21-year-old striker, who currently plays for 1. FC Union Berlin, had been under close observation by the Ghana Football Association and Black Stars head coach Otto Addo in recent months. With Ghana actively strengthening its squad for the expanded 2026 tournament, Ansah was viewed as one of the promising young dual-national talents who could bolster the team’s attacking options.
However, the forward has opted to remain committed to Germany’s youth development pathway for now. Speaking in an interview quoted by Tribuna, Ansah clarified his position:
“I’ve decided to soak up everything I’m currently experiencing at Union and continue playing for the German U21 team. After the U21 European Championship, I’ll look into it next year and make a decision. As things stand, I won’t be going to the World Cup with Ghana.”

Ansah has already earned six caps for Germany’s U21 side, registering one goal, and is determined to solidify his growth within the German system. His immediate focus remains on establishing himself at Union Berlin while gaining further international exposure with Germany’s youth team.
While this decision temporarily closes the door on a Black Stars call-up, it does not permanently rule out a future switch. With eligibility still open, Ghana may yet revisit discussions should Ansah reconsider his senior international allegiance after the U21 European Championship.
For now, the talented striker’s trajectory remains firmly aligned with Germany, as he continues to build his career at club and youth international level before making what could be a defining decision about his long-term international future
