Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings: A New Generation Leader Shaping Ghana’s Future

Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings stands as one of Ghana’s most dynamic and impactful public figures, an accomplished medical doctor, devoted humanitarian, passionate activist, and influential political leader. Born on 1st June 1978 in Accra, she carries the distinguished legacy of being the eldest daughter of former President Jerry John Rawlings and former First Lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings. Yet, beyond her illustrious heritage, Zanetor has carved an extraordinary path defined by service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to national development.

Hailing from Dzelukope in the Volta Region, Zanetor’s early life was shaped by discipline, excellence, and a deep sense of responsibility. She began her basic education at North Ridge Lyceum and continued at Achimota School, institutions known for grooming some of Ghana’s finest leaders. She later completed her secondary education at the prestigious Wesley Girls’ High School in 1996, reinforcing her foundation of academic distinction.

Inspired by a desire to heal and serve, Zanetor pursued Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, becoming a qualified medical doctor. However, her thirst for knowledge and her interest in peace and security further propelled her into advanced studies in crisis management, defence management, conflict resolution, and peacekeeping. She holds certifications from the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College, the London School of Economics, and multiple specialized programs at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC). She also earned a Master’s degree in Conflict, Peace and Security, training that has since shaped her approach to governance, advocacy, and community leadership.

Before entering frontline politics, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings practiced medicine in general healthcare, but her humanitarian spirit quickly extended her work beyond the consulting room. She became actively involved in initiatives focused on women’s empowerment, children’s welfare, public health, and sanitation. Her hands-on leadership during national crises earned her widespread admiration. In the aftermath of the tragic June 3 fire and flood disaster in 2015, Dr. Zanetor personally led relief efforts, mobilizing resources, coordinating donations, and comforting affected families. Her role went far beyond symbolism; she worked directly within vulnerable communities, including facilitating the construction of a bridge for the Osu Anorhor community to ease transportation challenges and mitigate flooding.

Her humanitarian work drew national attention, and soon, calls for her to take up formal political leadership grew louder. Although initially hesitant, Zanetor responded to the people’s call. In September 2015, she filed her nomination to contest the Klottey-Korle parliamentary primaries on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Despite having no prior political aspirations, her environmental activism and community service had made her a natural choice. With strong public support, and the visible endorsement of her father, she won the primaries and subsequently secured the parliamentary seat in the 2016 general elections.

Since then, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings has become a formidable voice in Parliament. She has served diligently in the 7th, 8th, and 9th Parliaments of the 4th Republic, representing the Klottey-Korle Constituency with distinction. Her work on the Gender and Children Committee and the Environment, Science and Technology Committee reflects her passion for social protection, environmental sustainability, and inclusive development. In the 2024 elections, she was once again re-elected—a testament to her unshakeable bond with her constituents and their trust in her leadership.

Away from politics, Zanetor is a proud mother of three. She is also a Christian whose values of service, humility, and compassion continue to guide her work.
