U.S. strengthens Botswana’s air power with another C-130 Hercules as decades-long defence partnership deepens
The United States has reinforced its long-standing security partnership with Botswana by delivering another C-130H Hercules military transport aircraft to the Botswana Defence Force (BDF), significantly enhancing the Southern African nation’s airlift capabilities and strengthening defence cooperation between the two allies.
The latest delivery marks another milestone in the decades-old relationship between the two countries, highlighting Washington’s continued commitment to supporting Botswana’s defence modernization, regional security operations, humanitarian missions, and disaster response efforts.
Announcing the development, the U.S. Embassy in Botswana described the aircraft donation as a significant achievement in the enduring bilateral partnership between the United States and Botswana.
“The donation will strengthen Botswana’s strategic airlift capability and further deepen the long-standing partnership between our two countries,” the embassy stated.
The aircraft was transferred under the United States’ Excess Defense Articles (EDA) Programme, an initiative managed by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) that allows surplus U.S. military equipment to be provided to trusted allies and strategic partners across the world.
The delivery follows an announcement made in May 2026 by Kelli L. Seybolt, the U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of the Air Force for International Affairs, during an official visit to Botswana. Seybolt confirmed that the Botswana Defence Force had been selected to receive another C-130H Hercules under the programme, recognizing Botswana’s reputation as one of America’s most reliable and stable security partners in Africa.
This is not the first time Botswana has benefited from the programme. In 2024, the United States handed over a C-130H Hercules valued at approximately $30 million during an official ceremony at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport. That aircraft was intended to improve Botswana’s ability to conduct military operations, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief missions, and emergency responses both within its borders and across the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
The partnership has continued to expand since then. On August 5, 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Botswana announced that Washington had formally notified the U.S. Congress of plans to transfer two additional C-130H Hercules aircraft to Botswana, with each aircraft valued at approximately $12 million. The latest delivery represents another important step in fulfilling that commitment.
Botswana’s experience operating the Hercules aircraft spans nearly three decades. The Botswana Defence Force originally acquired three C-130B Hercules aircraft from the North Carolina Air National Guard through the National Guard Bureau’s State Partnership Program. Since entering service in 1997, the aircraft have formed the backbone of Botswana’s military air transport capability.

Although one aircraft was eventually placed in storage and another was grounded in 2024, the Hercules fleet has remained central to Botswana’s military operations, supporting strategic airlift missions, troop deployments, humanitarian assistance, and regional peacekeeping efforts.
Over the years, Botswana’s C-130 fleet has participated in numerous regional and international operations, including Southern African Development Community (SADC) missions in Mozambique, African Union peace support operations, and United Nations missions in Sudan. The aircraft have also played a vital role in multinational military exercises, regional air power training, and joint special forces operations conducted alongside international partners.
Beyond supplying aircraft, the United States has continued investing in the operational readiness of Botswana’s air fleet. Earlier this year, Washington delivered more than 12,000 aircraft spare parts to support the C-130H donated in 2024.
The shipment included a wide range of critical maintenance equipment and replacement components, including O-rings, air compressors, lubricants, altimeter testing kits, and specialized propeller repair workstations designed to improve maintenance efficiency and ensure long-term operational reliability.
The continued military assistance underscores the growing strategic relationship between the United States and Botswana, a country widely regarded as one of Africa’s most stable democracies and a dependable security partner in Southern Africa.
As regional security challenges, humanitarian emergencies, and disaster response needs continue to evolve, the expanded C-130 Hercules fleet is expected to significantly strengthen Botswana’s ability to respond rapidly to national emergencies while supporting peacekeeping, humanitarian relief, and security operations across the SADC region and the African continent.
