Trading Innocence for Survival: Prostitution and Survival Sex Among Street Youth
Across cities and towns, in the shadows of streetlights and behind the noise of moving traffic, are stories too painful to tell and too real to ignore. Among them is the growing reality of young people forced into prostitution and survival sex not out of choice, but as a desperate response to life on the margins. These are the stories of street youth who have been pushed to the edge, where the only currency left to trade is their own bodies.
Survival sex refers to the act of exchanging sexual favors for basic needs like food, shelter, clothing, or protection. For many young people living on the streets, it is not a career or lifestyle they envision it is often the last resort in a world that has abandoned them. These youth are not just numbers or labels. They are boys and girls who fled from abuse at home, lost their parents, or were thrown out because of poverty, domestic violence, or even their identity. Once on the street, the struggle for survival begins, and in a system that offers little protection or support, they are often targeted and exploited.
The danger lies not only in the physical risks they face exposure to sexually transmitted infections, violence, and unwanted pregnancies but also in the deep emotional scars that come with it. Many suffer in silence, dealing with trauma, shame, and depression. They become victims of a cycle that is both harsh and invisible to the rest of society. Often, they are blamed for their situation, labelled as deviant or immoral, when in reality, they are simply trying to survive in an unforgiving world. Society rarely sees their pain. We pass them on the streets, unaware of what they endure when the night falls. And yet, behind every face is a story one that could have been different if there was just a little more support, a little more understanding, and a system that truly cared.
Solving this crisis requires more than sympathy. It calls for action that is rooted in compassion and justice. These young people need safe places to sleep, access to healthcare, counselling, and pathways out of exploitation. They need role models who can guide them, and communities that will welcome them without judgment. More importantly, we must address the root causes poverty, family breakdown, abuse, and lack of education so that no child is ever forced to sell their body just to eat or find shelter.
The conversation around prostitution and survival sex among street youth must shift. We must see these children not as statistics or problems, but as survivors resilient, brave, and still full of potential. They do not need our pity; they need our protection, our policies, and our promise to do better.
