Serena Williams’ Queen’s Club Comeback Ends Early After Partner Victoria Mboko Suffers Injury

Tennis legend Serena Williams has seen her highly anticipated return to competitive tennis at the HSBC Championships come to an unexpected end after doubles partner Victoria Mboko was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to a left knee injury.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion, made headlines earlier this week when she returned to professional tennis for the first time in nearly four years. The 44-year-old icon delighted fans with a remarkable comeback performance at Queen’s Club, partnering with rising Canadian star Mboko in the doubles competition.

The duo had captured the attention of tennis enthusiasts worldwide after producing an impressive opening-round victory against third seeds Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez. Playing her first competitive match in 1,375 days, Williams showcased flashes of the brilliance that made her one of the greatest athletes in tennis history, displaying her trademark powerful serve, aggressive groundstrokes, and competitive spirit in a straight-sets victory.

However, their promising run was cut short following an unfortunate incident involving Mboko during her singles match on Wednesday. The 19-year-old Canadian suffered a painful fall while trailing former world number one Karolina Pliskova. Mboko immediately grabbed her knee and cried out in pain before being forced to retire from the match. She later left the court visibly emotional, raising concerns about the severity of the injury.

As a result of Mboko’s withdrawal, Canada’s Leylah Fernandez and Germany’s Laura Siegemund automatically advanced to the doubles semi-finals, ending Williams’ comeback appearance at Queen’s earlier than expected.

Despite the disappointing conclusion, Williams remained positive and offered words of encouragement to her young partner. Taking to Instagram, the tennis superstar described the tournament as a memorable experience and praised Mboko’s potential.

“What a fun and memorable week at the HSBC Championships. Thank you to everyone who made it so special,” Williams wrote.

She added: “Vicky Mboko, you’re an incredible talent and you’ll be back out there in no time. Wishing you a speedy recovery.”

The extent of Mboko’s injury is yet to be officially confirmed, but reports suggest there are concerns the talented teenager could face a race against time to be fit for Wimbledon, which begins on June 29.

Meanwhile, Williams’ return to the sport appears far from over. The American legend is expected to continue her comeback campaign at the Berlin Open next week, where reports indicate she will team up with Czech star Karolina Muchova in the doubles competition.

Her recent performances have also reignited speculation about a possible appearance at Wimbledon. The All England Club’s wildcard committee is scheduled to meet next week to determine invitations for this year’s Championships, and Williams’ successful return at Queen’s has inevitably strengthened discussions about a potential wildcard entry.

Deborah Jevans, Chair of the All England Club, expressed excitement at the prospect of seeing Williams return to Wimbledon, noting that her remarkable achievements at the tournament would certainly be considered during the wildcard selection process.

Although her Queen’s Club journey ended prematurely, Williams’ successful return has already generated significant excitement across the tennis world. Fans now eagerly await her next appearance as one of the sport’s most celebrated champions continues her inspiring comeback story.
