The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into deep mourning following the confirmed death of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo.
Multiple Nigerian media outlets confirmed on Tuesday that the celebrated actor passed away at the age of 40 after an alleged battle with illness. Tributes have since poured in from colleagues, fans, and celebrities across Africa, describing his death as a painful loss to Nollywood.
The heartbreaking news was confirmed by several Nollywood actors, including Funke Akindele, Bolanle Ninalowo, and Godwin Nnadiekwe, who shared emotional messages mourning the late actor.
Alexx Ekubo was widely known for his outstanding performances in romantic dramas, comedy films, and blockbuster Nollywood productions. Over the years, he became one of the most recognizable faces in African cinema, admired for his charisma, fashion sense, and versatility on screen.
Born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor rose to prominence after emerging as the first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition before transitioning successfully into acting. He featured in several hit movies including Weekend Getaway, Bling Lagosians, A Sunday Affair, and The Blood Covenant.
Fans had earlier expressed concern over his prolonged absence from social media and public appearances, with reports indicating that his last online post was shared in December 2024.
