The broader campaign traces back to the assassination of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei at the onset of hostilities on February 28, a pivotal moment that reshaped the trajectory of the conflict and triggered a wave of high-level casualties across Iran’s political and military elite.
Israeli Position: Expanded Operational Mandate
Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz, confirmed the strike, stating that Khatib had been “eliminated” as part of an expanded operational directive. According to Katz, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli Defense Forces have authorized the targeting of senior Iranian officials without requiring further political clearance once operational conditions are met.

While state officials emphasize unity and continuity, reactions among Iranian citizens appear more complex. Some view the removal of senior figures like Khatib as potentially easing internal repression, suggesting it could lower the risks faced by protesters despite expectations that successors will quickly fill leadership gaps.
President Pezeshkian, however, struck a defiant tone, expressing confidence that those who follow will carry forward their mission “more steadfastly than before.”

Funeral processions in Tehran drew large crowds, not only for Khatib but also for Larijani, Soleimani, and dozens of sailors killed in a separate U.S. naval strike earlier this month.
