Heart Disease : A Growing Threat with Limited Awareness

When we think of health challenges in Africa, we often think of malaria, cholera, or typhoid. But there is a quieter, deadlier enemy that’s claiming lives at an alarming rate heart disease. It is no longer just a Western problem. In Ghana and across the continent, heart disease is on the rise, and yet, not enough people are talking about it.

heart attack concept

Heart disease refers to a group of conditions that affect the heart and blood vessels ranging from high blood pressure and heart attacks to strokes and heart failure. At the center of it all is one simple truth: the heart, the organ that keeps us alive, is being strained and damaged more than ever before.

In the past, heart-related illnesses were seen as problems for the elderly. But today, young men and women in their 30s and 40s are falling victim. Why? The reasons are all around us high-stress jobs, poor eating habits, smoking, alcohol abuse, and the rising tide of obesity. Our modern lifestyle, though more comfortable, is placing more pressure on our hearts.

A common root cause is high blood pressure, also known as “the silent killer.” It slowly damages the blood vessels, making it harder for the heart to pump blood efficiently. When left untreated, it can lead to a stroke or heart attack. Unfortunately, many people don’t even know they have high blood pressure until they collapse or end up in the hospital.

Our diets are also to blame. Foods high in salt, saturated fat, sugar, and oil like fried rice, processed meats, and sugary drinks are now more common than ever. Fast food has replaced home-cooked, vegetable-rich meals. Fruits are often skipped, and water is replaced by soda. These small choices, repeated over time, weigh heavily on the heart.

Stress is another major factor. The pressures of city life, joblessness, family responsibilities, and even academic performance keep many people constantly anxious. This emotional weight doesn’t just affect the mind it weakens the heart.

But here’s the hope: heart disease is largely preventable.

It starts with awareness. Knowing your blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels can help you take control of your health. Adding regular physical activity even just 30 minutes of walking a day can make a big difference. Choosing water over soda, preparing healthier meals at home, and making time for rest and relaxation can protect the heart more than any expensive medicine.

We must also break the silence around this issue. Community groups, schools, churches, and health workers must educate people not just about surviving disease, but about preventing it altogether. Screenings should be encouraged, not feared. Medication should be taken seriously, not avoided due to stigma or ignorance.

Your heart is not just an organ. It is your life source. You only get one and how you treat it today determines how it treats you tomorrow. So let’s put our hearts first. Not just in words, but in actions. Because a strong heart builds a strong nation.
