Ghana Set to Commence Construction of Nation’s Tallest Bridge with Japanese-Backed Technology

Ghana is preparing to embark on one of its most ambitious infrastructure projects to date with the planned construction of the Volivo Bridge, which is poised to become the tallest road bridge in the country. The landmark project follows successful high-level engagements between the Government of Ghana and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to modern, world-class transport infrastructure.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, confirmed that discussions with JICA’s Head of Africa Investment, Yushi Nagano, were highly productive and have paved the way for the commencement of construction. According to the Minister, President John Dramani Mahama is expected to officially break ground for the project later this year, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s infrastructure development agenda.

The Volivo Bridge will be a 540-metre cable-stayed structure, featuring a 280-metre main span supported by 51-metre towers. Designed to meet modern engineering and safety standards, the bridge will include two traffic lanes, pedestrian sidewalks, and safety railings. Upon completion, it will surpass the historic Adomi Bridge by more than 200 metres in length, setting new national records as Ghana’s longest cable-stayed span and the tallest bridge towers in the country.

Strategically located along the Eastern Corridor, the Volivo Bridge is expected to transform transportation between the Volta and Oti regions. The project will significantly enhance regional connectivity, reduce travel time, facilitate the movement of goods and people, and stimulate trade and economic activities across northern and southern Ghana. It is also anticipated to play a crucial role in strengthening regional integration and unlocking new development opportunities for communities along the corridor.

JICA’s involvement underscores Japan’s enduring partnership with Ghana and its broader commitment to supporting sustainable infrastructure development across Africa. Through a combination of financing, technical expertise, and project management support, Japan continues to play a key role in delivering high-quality infrastructure that meets international standards.

The Volivo Bridge forms part of Ghana’s long-term strategy to modernize critical transport networks and drive inclusive economic growth. Japan’s proven track record in delivering advanced road and bridge projects across the continent adds significant value to the initiative, ensuring durability, safety, and innovation.

With construction expected to commence within the year, the Volivo Bridge is set to become not only a vital transport link but also a powerful symbol of Ghana’s engineering ambition, economic progress, and successful international cooperation. By leveraging Japanese-backed technology and expertise, the project establishes a strong precedent for future large-scale infrastructure developments in Ghana and across Africa.
