Ghana Intensifies War on Cybercrime, Arrests Nine Nigerian Nationals in Major Accra Operation

Ghana has stepped up its nationwide campaign against cross-border cybercrime with the arrest of nine Nigerian nationals suspected of running highly organised online fraud networks from concealed locations in and around Accra.

The arrests were carried out during a two-day, intelligence-driven security operation that targeted makeshift offices believed to be central command points for coordinated cybercrime activities. The operation resulted in the seizure of 62 laptop computers, 52 mobile phones, and two pump-action firearms, evidence authorities say points to the sophistication, scale, and dangerous nature of the criminal networks involved.

In a significant humanitarian breakthrough, security agencies also rescued 44 individuals believed to be victims of human trafficking. Preliminary investigations reveal that the victims were lured from Nigeria to Ghana under false promises of well-paying jobs and improved living conditions. Upon arrival, they were allegedly held in gated compounds, stripped of their travel documents, and coerced into participating in cybercrime operations against their will.

The rescued victims have since been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for protection, documentation, and further assessment as authorities work to determine appropriate rehabilitation and repatriation measures.

According to investigators, the criminal syndicates specialised in romance scams, where perpetrators establish fake emotional relationships online to manipulate unsuspecting victims into sending money, as well as business email compromise schemes, in which fraudsters impersonate company executives or employers to illegally obtain funds and sensitive corporate information.

The weekend operation was jointly coordinated by key state institutions, including the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), as part of Ghana’s broader national strategy to dismantle cybercrime syndicates, protect both local and international victims, and safeguard the country’s digital ecosystem.

Confirming the arrests, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Sam George, stated that all suspects have been fully profiled and transferred to the Ghana Immigration Service for safekeeping while investigations continue. He issued a stern warning to foreign nationals, urging them to independently verify claims made by individuals who attempt to lure them to Ghana under suspicious circumstances.

The minister further disclosed that suspects arrested in earlier related operations have either been extradited to Nigerian law enforcement authorities or are currently facing prosecution under Ghanaian law.

Ghana’s cybersecurity agencies, working in close collaboration with international partners, including authorities in the United States, have recently recorded notable successes in the fight against cybercrime. Among them is the arrest of Ghanaian social media influencer Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, who is alleged to have defrauded vulnerable American victims of approximately $8 million through romance scams. He has yet to publicly respond to the allegations.

Another recent breakthrough saw the dismantling of a cybercrime syndicate responsible for defrauding more than 200 victims of over $400,000, further underscoring Ghana’s renewed determination to clamp down on digital crime and protect its reputation as a safe, secure destination for business, investment, and tourism.
