Chaos at McDan Warehouse Demolition Confusion, Clashes, and Journalist Intimidation Claims Surface

In what has become a trending topic across Ghana’s media landscape, the controversial demolition of a warehouse reportedly owned by businessman Dr. Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan, has sparked public outrage and raised serious concerns about the use of force by state security.

The warehouse, located along Spintex Road in Accra, was razed down on July 28, 2025, in a swift and intense operation allegedly carried out by personnel believed to be from Ghana’s National Security. Bulldozers moved in under the cover of dawn, and by morning, a significant portion of the property was reduced to rubble. Eyewitnesses claimed the demolition occurred without any formal notice or visible court order, leaving business owners and onlookers stunned.

But what’s further ignited public concern is not just the act of demolition, it’s what reportedly happened around it.

During live coverage of the incident, it was alleged that a journalist from JoyNews was picked up by armed military personnel. The said journalist, who was reportedly documenting the event, was threatened, with one of the uniformed men allegedly attempting to slap him. The incident, if confirmed, marks yet another dark stain in Ghana’s ongoing struggle to protect press freedom and the rights of journalists working in volatile environments.

Although there is no official footage or confirmed report directly linking JoyNews to the altercation at the demolition site, similar cases from recent weeks lend weight to the possibility. In a separate incident during the Ablekuma North parliamentary re-run election on July 11, JoyNews reporter Sally Martey was physically assaulted by an unidentified thug while covering the elections. These patterns of hostility toward journalists are beginning to spark wider conversations about the safety of media professionals in Ghana.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), which condemned the Ablekuma assaults, has yet to issue a statement on the Spintex demolition saga. However, calls for clarity and accountability are mounting.

For many Ghanaians, the bigger question looms: Who ordered the demolition? Was due process followed? And if reports of journalist intimidation are true, who will be held accountable?

In a democratic society, press freedom is not optional it is fundamental. As authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both the demolition and the alleged assault, the hope is that transparency will prevail and justice will be served.

The nation watches closely.
