UGMC Breaks Ground with Ghana’s First-Ever Pinhole Obesity Surgery

In a major milestone for Ghana’s healthcare system, the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) has successfully performed the country’s first-ever pinhole obesity surgery. This groundbreaking medical procedure, officially carried out on July 25, 2025, marks a bold step forward in tackling the rising tide of obesity and related chronic diseases in Ghana.

Unlike traditional weight-loss surgeries, this innovative “pinhole” technique involves making five tiny incisions, each just about one centimeter wide, through which surgeons skillfully reduce the size of the stomach. Known medically as laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, the operation limits food intake, leading to dramatic weight loss over time. The UGMC team, working alongside renowned Kenyan surgeon Dr. Kenedy Ondede, successfully removed about 60–80% of the patient’s stomach using this ultra-minimally invasive method.

What makes this achievement even more remarkable is the collaboration it involved. A team of 30 medical professionals from multiple disciplines came together to make this surgery possible. UGMC’s own Dr. Dominic Darkwa and Dr. Emmanuel Nachelleh led the local team in partnership with international experts. The seamless coordination between surgical teams, anesthetists, dietitians, and psychologists points to a new model of comprehensive, patient-centered care in Ghana.

But this breakthrough goes beyond just medical headlines, it has real-life implications for many Ghanaians. According to recent health statistics, a growing percentage of Ghana’s adult population is facing obesity and related issues such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and joint problems. With limited non-surgical solutions showing long-term success, this new surgical option gives hope to those for whom lifestyle changes alone haven’t worked.

The advantages are clear: faster recovery times, reduced risk of surgical complications, and life-changing health benefits. Many patients can expect significant weight loss within 12 to 24 months, often seeing dramatic improvements in their quality of life. Some are even able to reverse chronic conditions like high blood pressure and insulin resistance altogether.

However, UGMC is quick to remind the public that the surgery is not a magic fix. Long-term success depends heavily on structured lifestyle support dietary counseling, psychological care, and consistent follow-ups are essential parts of the treatment plan. This holistic approach ensures that patients not only lose weight but also maintain healthy habits to avoid relapse.

Ghana’s first pinhole obesity surgery is not just a medical triumph; it’s a beacon of what’s possible when innovation meets collaboration. It reflects UGMC’s growing reputation as a center for advanced healthcare and opens the door for other facilities in West Africa to follow suit.

As obesity continues to affect the health and wellbeing of many Ghanaians, this development couldn’t have come at a better time. UGMC’s success story signals that with the right investment, expertise, and patient-centered care, Ghana is more than capable of leading Africa into a healthier future.

Looking ahead, UGMC plans to expand its bariatric services, ensuring that more patients in need can access this life-saving procedure. It’s a hopeful chapter for Ghanaian medicine and a powerful reminder that innovation, when backed by care, can change lives.
