Darlington Agyekum, popularly known as D-Cryme, is a decorated Ghanaian hip-hop artist and pioneer of the Twi-pop music genre. With many awards under his belt, D-Crime has advised upcoming musicians to focus on the business side of their music careers.
In an interview on HitzFM, D-Cryme was asked why musicians often switch from one genre to another. He explained that understanding the business aspect of music is crucial.
“It is not bad if a musician switches from rap to singing. It is just the study of your game. If I am paid to perform at a wedding, I cannot go to the wedding to perform rap music. To show my tongue-twisting prowess. I will have to sing the songs that got me invited to the event. Sing the songs the people can relate with,” he said.
This discussion comes after famous Ghanaian musician King Paluta switched from his native rap music to singing in recent years. The switch has significantly boosted his popularity, giving him one of the most popular songs in Ghana now. King Paluta’s move from rap to singing has paid off well, making a substantial impact on the music industry.
D-Cryme shared these insights while promoting his new EP, “UNEXPECTED |||,” which he released as a birthday gift for his fans on July 19, 2024. He mentioned that he invested a lot of time and effort into this project. The three-track EP showcases his best work, with expert touches to ensure high quality.
D-Cryme encourages upcoming musicians to understand and focus on the business side of their music. He believes that this knowledge can help artists adapt to different situations and maximize their opportunities.
