Ghanaian Highlife singer Francisca Gawugah, known by the stage name Sista Afia, has questioned the snub of Chatter House in the Telecel Ghana Music Awards nominations.
The Ghanaian singer and songwriter took to social media to express her displeasure after missing out on this year’s nominations. Sista Afia, who released some beautiful songs such as Carry Go, Maradona and Shine Your Eyes in the year under review has revealed some occurrences she has observed between herself and the Ghana Music Awards scheme despite having some nominations in 2020 and 2021.
Charter House Ghana, the organizers of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, unveiled the nominees for their 25th edition on Thursday, March 28, 2024, which has since got the whole music industry talking. The awards night is scheduled for Saturday, June 1, 2024. The nominees’ announcement came with a number of controversies, and a number of industry folks have had their bites of it. Musicians such as Amerado and Buddy Roro have spoken up about the failure to acknowledge their efforts.
“Have I offended someone at the high table Ghana Music Awards ?? The fact that Asuoden was a big song in 2021 Zero nominations, which I still don’t get. I learnt people don’t even file for nominations but get nominations, the downplay on my efforts ever since i started doing music in Ghana hasn’t been fair to my craft And Yes it hurts because I work soo hard. I’ve been quiet for so long because i have respect for the scheme, and I dont want to step on no one’s toes!” Sista Afia shared.
The fluffily beautiful singer gained recognition following the release of her single “Jeje”, which featured dancehall frontliner, Shatta Wale, and Afezi Perry. Queen Solomon, as she is affectionately called, returned to Ghana in 2015 to start her music career as she took inspiration from musician Bisa Kdei and collaborated on the song “Kro Kro No”. She followed up with Yi Wani, which features Kifi Kinaata, and she proved doubters wrong by going on to become one of the most attractive brands in the Ghanaian music scene.
The ‘Corner Corner’ hitmaker had some heights in the attention of the music industry during the Covid 19 pandemic season with some trial of her rap prowess, which caused the likes of the first MTN Hit Maker winner, Freda Rhymz and the queen of Ghana rap, Eno Barony to join the rap feast. She engaged in a physical banter with the Sunyani rapper when the two met at TV3 after the lyrical trade and later finalized on their hit collaboration, ‘Saucy’ by the former Black Avenue Music signee.
Sista Afia is currently on a school tour, where she visits high school and tertiary institutions to perform and motivate students. She has made herself available for invitations, and interested educational institutions can reach out to her to grace their SRC events.
