Idris and Sabrina Elba Lead Bold Vision to Transform Sierra Leone’s Sherbro Island into a Sustainable Eco-City
Award-winning actor Idris Elba and his wife, model and philanthropist Sabrina Elba, are spearheading an ambitious initiative to transform Sherbro Island, an underdeveloped yet resource-rich coastal enclave in Sierra Leone, into a model for sustainable development across Africa.
Nestled along the country’s sweeping Atlantic coastline, Sherbro Island is a striking paradox. Comparable in size to Chicago but home to just 40,000 people, the island boasts pristine beaches, expansive lagoons, and abundant fresh water. Yet despite its natural wealth, the community faces significant infrastructural challenges, including limited access to electricity, weak internet connectivity, and constrained economic opportunities for its largely farming and fishing population.
For the Elbas, Sherbro Island represents more than a development project, it is a chance to reshape the global narrative about Africa. Drawing on their personal heritage, Idris’s Sierra Leonean roots and Sabrina’s Somali background, the couple is committed to showcasing a new story: one defined by innovation, resilience, and investment rather than dependency.
“We wanted to see Africa represented the way we know it to be,” Sabrina Elba emphasizes. “This is about changing the storytelling, from aid to opportunity.”
Their journey began in earnest in 2019 during a visit to Sierra Leone through their ambassadorial work with the International Fund for Agricultural Development. What started as a routine tour of smallholder farms quickly evolved into a transformative vision. The couple recognized the untapped potential of Sherbro Island, not just as a tourism destination, but as a blueprint for sustainable, community-driven growth.
Shortly thereafter, they launched the Elba Hope Foundation, consolidating their philanthropic efforts and laying the groundwork for long-term impact. Early initiatives focused on empowering local farmers through training in sustainable agricultural practices, cooperative development, and improved access to financing. The goal: to move beyond short-term aid and build lasting economic resilience.
Building on this foundation, the Elbas have significantly expanded their ambitions. In a landmark move, they unveiled the Hope Power Project, a three-year initiative designed to electrify and digitally connect the entire island using renewable energy solutions. This transformative effort is being driven in partnership with global industry leaders, including Octopus Energy and ServiceNow.

The project will see the installation of wind turbines, solar power systems, and clean water infrastructure, while also equipping local residents with the skills needed to operate and maintain these systems. By prioritizing both sustainability and local capacity-building, the initiative aims to create a self-sufficient ecosystem powered by clean energy.
For Idris Elba, the vision goes far beyond infrastructure. “This is about building in a way that nourishes the planet and empowers people,” he says. “Sherbro can become a blueprint for how we design the cities of tomorrow.”
Ultimately, the Elbas envision transforming Sherbro Island into a fully functioning, renewable-powered eco-city, one that not only uplifts its residents but also serves as a replicable model for development across the continent.
With strategic partnerships, long-term investment, and a clear sense of purpose, the couple is proving that impactful change requires more than visibility, it demands commitment, collaboration, and bold thinking.
In redefining what development can look like, Idris and Sabrina Elba are not just investing in an island, they are helping to shape a new African narrative, one driven by sustainability, innovation, and possibility.
