Ghana, Jamaica Seal Landmark Agreement to Deploy Teachers and Nurses
Ghana and Jamaica have taken a significant step in strengthening South–South cooperation with the conclusion of a landmark labour exchange agreement that will see Ghanaian teachers and nurses deployed to Jamaica. The initiative is expected to create valuable overseas employment opportunities for Ghanaian professionals while deepening the historic ties between the two nations.
The agreement was announced by Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following high-level discussions with Jamaica’s Prime Minister, Dr Andrew Michael Holness, during an official visit by a Ghanaian delegation to the Caribbean nation.
In a statement shared on social media on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, Mr Ablakwa revealed that both sides had agreed to establish a special labour exchange programme, which is expected to commence later this year. While specific figures and contractual terms are yet to be finalised, the programme will focus primarily on the deployment of qualified Ghanaian teachers and nurses to support Jamaica’s education and healthcare sectors.
Beyond labour cooperation, the talks underscored the strong diplomatic goodwill between the two countries. Prime Minister Holness expressed deep appreciation to President John Dramani Mahama and the people of Ghana for their solidarity and assistance following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, describing Ghana’s gesture as one Jamaica would “long remember.”
The bilateral discussions also explored plans to initiate a Ghana–Jamaica Defence Cooperation Agreement, signalling a broadening partnership that extends beyond diplomacy and cultural heritage into security collaboration.
On the economic front, both sides examined opportunities for Ghanaian businesses to participate in Jamaica’s ambitious infrastructure renewal drive, part of the Caribbean nation’s “Build Back Better” agenda. The initiative is expected to open new avenues for Ghanaian firms seeking to expand into the Caribbean market.
At the multilateral level, Prime Minister Holness pledged Jamaica’s support for President Mahama’s proposed United Nations resolution aimed at recognising the transatlantic slave trade as the greatest crime against humanity and renewing global calls for reparations.

Mr Ablakwa noted that Ghana looks forward to welcoming Dr Holness to Accra, as the Jamaican leader has expressed keen interest in visiting Ghana in the near future.
For many Ghanaians, particularly teachers and nurses grappling with limited opportunities at home, the proposed labour exchange offers a timely pathway to international employment, skills transfer, and income generation, while reinforcing Ghana’s growing diplomatic, economic, and cultural footprint on the global stage.
