Ghana Moves to Reclaim Kwame Nkrumah’s Former Residence in Guinea for Heritage Preservation

The Government of Ghana has initiated high-level discussions to reclaim and preserve the former residence of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in the Republic of Guinea, marking a significant step in safeguarding the legacy of Ghana’s founding President and one of Africa’s foremost Pan-African visionaries.

Acting on the directive of President John Dramani Mahama, the government has opened negotiations with the family of Guinea’s first President, Ahmed Sékou Touré, to acquire the historic home where Dr. Nkrumah spent his final years in exile as Co-President of Guinea. The property is set to be transformed into a heritage site dedicated to chronicling and celebrating Nkrumah’s life, leadership, and enduring influence on Africa’s liberation movement.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the initiative in a public statement on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, describing it as a deliberate effort to honour Dr. Nkrumah’s immense contribution to Ghana, Africa, and the global Pan-African struggle.

According to Mr. Ablakwa, the Mahama Administration plans to renovate and preserve the residence to create a comprehensive historical and cultural experience for visitors, scholars, and Pan-Africanists from around the world. The restored site will provide deeper insight into Dr. Nkrumah’s political journey, particularly his years in Guinea following the 1966 overthrow of his government.

“The Mahama Administration intends to renovate and preserve Nkrumah’s Guinea residence not only as a mark of respect, but also to safeguard his legacy and provide a full experience for tourists tracing his remarkable life from Ghana to Guinea,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently engaging the Sékou Touré family while also consulting heritage preservation experts to ensure that the restoration meets international conservation standards and accurately reflects the historical significance of the site.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s years in Guinea remain a defining chapter in Africa’s political history. After his overthrow in 1966, he was welcomed by President Sékou Touré, who appointed him Co-President of Guinea, a powerful symbol of African solidarity and resistance against imperialism.

By reclaiming and preserving this historic residence, Ghana seeks not only to honour the memory of its founding President but also to reinforce its commitment to Pan-African heritage, historical preservation, and cultural diplomacy.

The initiative is expected to strengthen Ghana- Guinea relations while positioning the site as an important destination for education, reflection, and Pan-African tourism.
