The National Communication Authority (NCA) has officially announced that Starlink, the international internet service provider owned by American inventor and technocrat Elon Musk, will begin operations in Ghana by the end of August 2024. This marks a significant milestone for the country’s internet service sector.
Initially, the NCA cautioned Ghanaians against using Starlink services as the company did not have the required license to operate in the country. However, after completing all necessary registrations and meeting regulatory requirements, the NCA has given Starlink the green light to provide internet services in Ghana. The company will be operated locally by SpaceX Starlink Gh Ltd.
Starlink’s entry into the Ghanaian market will introduce increased competition among existing internet service providers such as Vodafone, MTN, Airtel-Tigo, Surfline, and others. This competition is expected to push these companies to improve their services and offers, ultimately benefiting consumers with better internet access and options.
As the launch prepares, many Ghanaians are eager to experience the cutting-edge satellite-based internet service that has gained attention worldwide. The arrival of Starlink could pave the way for improved connectivity, especially in rural and underserved areas across the country.
