Dr. Mensa Otabil, Senior Pastor of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC), has shared strong advice for young people delaying marriage due to financial concerns. In a recent sermon, Dr. Otabil challenged the mindset that financial stability must precede marriage. Reflecting on his own experience, he revealed that he had very little to his name when he got married. He and his wife built a strong and lasting relationship despite their humble beginnings.
Dr. Mensa Otabil addressed the issue directly: “If you are waiting to get rich before you marry, your head is not working.” He emphasized that financial constraints should not prevent people from getting married. He further encouraged young couples to focus on growing together through prayer, support and shared struggles, rather than waiting for ideal financial conditions.
The preacher also offered practical advice for those who feel burdened by the costs associated with weddings. “If the cake, gown, food, and other stuff are the challenge, never mind. Come to the Church, let’s have it done in a simple way for you,” he urged.
Dr. Otabil’s message resonates with many young people, especially men, who often delay marriage in pursuit of financial security. This delay, he suggests, can lead to late marriages and desperation, as individuals may settle for less-than-ideal partners out of a sense of urgency. His words serve as a reminder that marriage is about growth, partnership, and mutual support, not financial wealth.
