Tyrone Marhguy, a name that gained national and international attention in 2021, has achieved a major academic milestone. Marhguy, one of the two Rastafarian students denied admission to Achimota Senior High School (SHS) because of his dreadlocks, has now completed his education at the school with flying colors.

In 2021, Marhguy and his friend, Oheneba Nkrabea, faced a tough situation. They were denied entry into Achimota SHS because their dreadlocks, worn as part of their Rastafarian faith, went against the school’s rules. This decision sparked a lot of debates and discussions both in Ghana and beyond. Many people argued that the school was wrong to deny them admission based on their religious beliefs. After a two-month court battle, the court ruled in favor of Marhguy, allowing him to attend Achimota SHS, while Nkrabea chose to attend another school.

Despite the challenges he faced at the beginning, Marhguy’s academic performance was nothing short of outstanding. In 2023, he took the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and achieved grade A in all eight subjects. This incredible success was a testament to his hard work and determination.

Reflecting on his journey, Marhguy shared how the challenges he faced only made his achievements more meaningful. He said, “As I reflect on this journey, I’m reminded of the challenges and triumphs that marked the past three years, starting right from Achimota School. My story, which I like to call ‘The Tales from Achimota School,’ began with a significant hurdle: a tough decision between keeping my Rastafarian dreadlocks, a symbol of my faith, and attending high school.”

Marhguy’s success has not gone unnoticed. He received multiple offers from prestigious universities, with scholarships totaling $1.4 million from institutions like Duke, Williams, and Franklin & Marshall.

Marhguy is quick to credit his family for their support during his journey. “I owe immense gratitude to my family, especially my father, Mr. Tereo Marhguy, for his relentless support and sacrifice,” he said. “To my mother, Mrs. Dorcas Fremarhguy, and my amazing sisters, Amrita Marhguy and Nikita Marhguy, thank you for being my rock and my inspiration.”

Tyrone Marhguy’s story is a powerful example of perseverance and the importance of standing up for one’s beliefs. His success serves as an inspiration to many, proving that with determination and support, one can overcome even the toughest challenges.
