Maradona Yeboah Agyei, popularly known as Guru, has been elected as the SRC President for the University of Ghana. Guru secured 9,455 votes, making up 50.7% of the 18,659 total votes cast, earning him the title of UGSRC President-elect.
However, Guru and his vice, Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, faced a significant challenge during the election process. Initially, both were disqualified because they were non-resident students of the university, which, according to the SRC constitution, makes them ineligible to hold office. This decision was contested in court, and a court injunction allowed them to be reinstated on the ballot paper for the election.
Guru, who is also a well-known hip-hop and hiplife artiste, based his campaign on the promise of transformational change for the university’s campus. He urged students to vote massively for growth and development, assuring them that his influence and experience would help him lead the university toward progress.
The student body appears to have resonated with his message, as his victory demonstrates strong support for his leadership. With this win, Guru is set to guide the student body through the 2024/2025 academic year, promising a new era of transformation and growth for the university community.
