Kurt Okraku, President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has voiced his frustration over the poor performance of the Black Stars in recent years. His concerns come after the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON), marking a low point in Ghana’s football history.
The AFCON qualifiers have been a dismal campaign for the Black Stars. After six games, they failed to secure a single victory, managing only three points out of a possible 18. Their lackluster display, culminating in a 2-1 defeat to Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium, has left fans and stakeholders disappointed. Many Ghanaians are now calling for a major overhaul in the country’s football management and operations. For this, the GFA President took to his social media handles to assure ghanaians of the hope ahead.
Speaking after the loss, Mr. Okraku did not mince words about the gravity of the situation. “From the highest heights of world football on the 29th of March 2022 to the lowest ebb of AFCON qualifying matches. My heart bleeds,” he stated.
He acknowledged the embarrassing state of Ghanaian football but expressed hope for a turnaround. “This is not what we want or what we bargained for. At this point, only cool heads can win. We, as leaders of our sport, will stay together, be honest with ourselves, and fix this problem,” he added.
The GFA President stressed that rebuilding Ghana’s football legacy will be a challenging process. However, he called for patience and unity, emphasizing that collective efforts would pave the way for success. “The road to full recovery after normalization is definitely bumpy and rough, but our collective efforts and patience will win. Ghana, our beloved country, will win,” he assured.
Despite the setbacks, Mr. Okraku remains optimistic about the future of the Black Stars. “As a Black Stars fan and as the leader, I share in your pain and in our pain. We will rise from this temporary setback. It shall be well,” he concluded.
Ghanaian football fans are now looking to the GFA and the national team to take decisive steps toward rebuilding trust, improving performance, and restoring the country’s football pride.
