Famous sports analyst Dan Kweku Yeboah has shared his views on the current struggles of the Ghanaian movie industry. Speaking on the United Showbiz program, Dan addressed the real causes behind the decline and offered suggestions on how the industry could rise again.
He argued that the collapse of the movie industry is due to a lack of investment, not because of “juju” (black magic), as some have claimed. Dan emphasized that the industry couldn’t withstand external pressures and eventually fell apart. He believes that if politicians and stakeholders invest in the movie industry, it could return to its golden era, especially Kumawood, the once-thriving film sector in Ghana.
This discussion comes after actress Portia Asare made headlines last week by claiming that the decline of the Ghanaian movie industry is due to the use of “juju.” She argued that until people in the industry stop using black magic, the struggles will continue. Her statement sparked widespread debate on social media and beyond.
Dan Kweku Yeboah responded by saying, “The issue of spirituality is interesting because it’s something that can’t be scientifically proven. I’m not saying spirituality doesn’t exist; we all have our individual faiths. But when it comes to the decline of the movie industry, I believe it’s due to a lack of investment. If we make the necessary production equipment affordable and invest in the industry, we will see quality movies and expansion. The idea that ‘juju’ caused the collapse is not true.”
He also pointed out that in Ghana, politicians often view sports, arts, and creativity as mere recreation, which is why they don’t invest in these fields. Dan believes that a change in this attitude could help revive the movie industry and bring it back to its former glory.
