Hiplife duo Keche recently expressed their concerns over the growing trend of Ghanaian artistes identifying themselves as Afrobeats artistes instead of embracing their roots in Hiplife and Highlife music.
In a recent phone-in interview on “The Big Show” with Nana Kwesi, the duo voiced their frustration, stating “Because we are not projecting Hiplife & Highlife enough, some wonderful Ghanaian brands labels themselves as Afrobeats artistes.”
They emphasized the need for artistes to stay true to their cultural heritage and the genres that have shaped Ghanaian music. Keche believes that the mislabeling of their music as Afrobeats may lead to the erasure of Hiplife and Highlife from the global music scene and also encouraged for more projections of the Ghanaian sound like Highlife & Hiplife.

The duo called on fellow musicians to be proud of their Ghanaian identity and to promote Hiplife and Highlife music on the global stage. They stressed the importance of preserving the unique sound and history of Ghanaian music for future generations.
Keche’s comments add to the ongoing debate surrounding the classification and representation of Ghanaian music in the international music industry. As the music landscape continues to evolve, it is essential for artists to maintain a strong connection to their musical roots while embracing new influences.
