The Rise Of John Dumelo : From Screens To Statesmanship
John Matthew Kofi Setor Dumelo, born on 3 February 1984, has grown to become one of Ghana’s most recognizable names not only in the creative industry, where he first made his mark, but also in the country’s political landscape. Today, he serves as the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon in the 9th Parliament of Ghana and the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, a position he assumed on 13 March 2025 after his appointment by President John Dramani Mahama.
Raised in Likpe Bala in the Oti Region, Dumelo comes from a family grounded in service and discipline. His father, John Dumelo, was a civil engineer, while his mother, Antoinette Dumelo, worked with the Customs Division. These roots shaped his work ethic and early exposure to leadership.
Dumelo began his education at Christ the King School in Accra, where his talent for the arts became evident. At Achimota School, he joined the Drama Club, nurturing a passion that would later blossom into a celebrated acting career. He later enrolled at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to study civil engineering and went on to win the prestigious “Mr. University” pageant. His drive for public service led him to further his education at GIMPA’s School of Public Service and Governance.
His entry into acting began remarkably early. At just age 7, Dumelo starred in the 1992 film Baby Thief, earning 20,000 old Ghana cedis and setting the stage for one of Ghana’s most successful acting careers. Over the years, he became a household name across Africa, admired for his talent, charisma, and versatility on screen.
Beyond entertainment, Dumelo is a dynamic entrepreneur. In 2012, he launched his clothing line, Melo, and has since ventured into both crop and animal farming, cementing his commitment to agriculture long before his ministerial appointment.
His political journey gained national attention during the 2016 election season, where he emerged as one of the most influential celebrity voices supporting the National Democratic Congress (NDC). His loyalty and patriotism reportedly earned him a role as Director of Operations for a youth-focused pro-NDC group under former President Mahama.
In July 2019, Dumelo formally entered frontline politics when he picked up nomination forms to contest the NDC parliamentary primaries for Ayawaso West Wuogon. He won the primaries on 24 August 2019 and ran a vibrant, youth-driven campaign for the 2020 elections, where he pledged to donate half of his MP salary to youth development. Although he narrowly lost that election, his resilience, visibility, and dedication kept him rooted in the constituency.
In the 2024 general election, Dumelo reclaimed momentum and secured a convincing victory, becoming the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon. His appointment as Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture shortly afterward marked a new chapter a transition from advocate to national policy implementer.
John Dumelo is also a family man. He is married to lawyer Gifty Mawunya Nkornu, with whom he held a grand wedding ceremony at the Royal Senchi Resort in Akosombo. The couple has three children: a son born in 2018, a daughter in 2022, and another son in 2024.
A digital pioneer in his own right, Dumelo made history on 1 April 2014 by becoming the first Ghanaian to reach one million likes on Facebook. His ability to connect with people both online and in person remains one of his strongest assets.
In October 2023, he captured national attention once again with a playful yet bold pledge: to walk backward and barefoot from the University of Ghana’s main gate to the Presec-Legon gate if Presec won the National Science and Maths Quiz. True to his word, he completed the trek when Presec emerged victorious a gesture that endeared him even more to the public.
