Angela Dwamena-Aboagye: A Trailblazer in Women’s Rights and Social Justice

Angela Dwamena-Aboagye, PhD, is a distinguished Ghanaian lawyer, gender activist, theologian, professional counsellor, author, and social justice advocate whose life’s work has been dedicated to protecting the rights of women and children. As the Executive Director of The Ark Foundation, Ghana, she has pioneered groundbreaking initiatives that continue to transform lives across the nation.

In 1999, Angela established Ghana’s first Domestic Violence Shelter, creating a safe haven for battered women and survivors of abuse. Through The Ark Foundation, she also set up crisis, legal, and counselling centres across the country, providing life-saving interventions for survivors of sexual and gender-based violence and child abuse.

Early Life and Education

Born in April 1965, Angela’s early education was shaped at Mfantsiman Secondary School and Holy Child School. She went on to study law at the University of Ghana, later qualifying as a Barrister at the Ghana School of Law in 1989. Driven by her passion for justice, she pursued further studies at the Georgetown University Law Center, Washington D.C., where she earned a Master of Laws degree. She also holds a Master of Arts in Theology from the Akrofi-Christaller Institute, Ghana, reflecting her deep integration of faith with advocacy.

Professional Career

Angela began her career at the Ministry of Justice and Attorney-General’s Department (1990–1999), where she worked as a State Attorney. In 1999, she resigned to fully commit to her vision, founding The Ark Foundation Ghana. Beyond her work at the foundation, she serves as an Adjunct Lecturer in Gender and the Law at the University of Ghana School of Law, while also consulting widely on women’s human rights, sexual harassment policies, and leadership training.

Advocacy and Impact

Angela is widely respected as a counsellor, motivational speaker, and trainer, using her platform to influence policies and shape public discourse on gender equality and child protection. Her leadership and voice have inspired women’s movements and strengthened legal and social frameworks for the protection of vulnerable groups.

Personal Life

Angela is married to Kwame Dwamena-Aboagye, a consultant with The Ark Foundation, and together they are blessed with four children.
