Kusasi Chief in Ashanti Region Shot Dead in Asawase
Tragedy struck the Asawase suburb of Kumasi on Tuesday night when Naa Abdul-Malik Azenbe, the Kusasi Chief in the Ashanti Region, was gunned down by unknown assailants. The attackers, reportedly riding motorbikes, approached and shot the chief at close range before fleeing the scene.
The incident has sparked heightened security concerns in the area. Prior to his untimely death, the late chief also served as the Kaadi Divisional Area Chief in the Binduri District of the Upper East Region.
According to eyewitness accounts, the shooting occurred swiftly and without warning. The chief was initially rushed to the Manhyia District Hospital but was later transferred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
In the aftermath, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Emmanuel Teye-Cudjoe, together with the Regional Crime Officer, ACP Ebenezer Boyor, and a team of officers visited the crime scene. Two empty shells, believed to be from an AK-47 assault rifle, were recovered and documented.
A police statement confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and authorities are working tirelessly to apprehend the perpetrators. “We urge the public to remain calm and assist with any relevant information by contacting the nearest police station or reaching out through emergency lines: 191, 18555, or 112,” the statement concluded.
The Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the Kusasi community in Ashanti, and the traditional leadership of the Kusaug area.
“This heinous act is not only an assault on a respected traditional authority but also a blow to the peace and security we all value,” he said. As Minister for the Interior, Mr. Mohammed-Mubarak assured the public that security agencies are committed to tracking down those responsible and ensuring they face justice.

He urged residents of Asawase and surrounding areas to remain calm and support the ongoing investigations by providing any useful information. “May Allah grant the late chief eternal rest and strengthen his family and community during this difficult time,” he added.
Heightened Security and Community Mourning
Following the incident, police have intensified security at the late chief’s residence to restore a sense of safety among residents. On Wednesday morning, mourners gathered at the home of the slain chief, where scenes of grief unfolded. Family members and sympathizers were inconsolable as they paid their last respects to the respected traditional leader.
The nation now watches closely as investigations continue, with many calling for swift justice and a renewed commitment to ensuring the safety of traditional leaders and community figures.
