The recent conferment of an honorary doctorate degree on Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno by the Accra Metropolitan University has sparked a wave of reactions online, with some netizens raising concerns about the status of the university and its accreditation.
The honorary degree was awarded during the university’s 2025 convocation ceremony, where IGP Yohuno and Ing. Patricia Obo-Nai, CEO of Telecel Ghana, were recognized for their exceptional contributions to national development and leadership.

Some users cautioned the IGP to “be vigilant” and “verify the credentials” of institutions bestowing honorary titles, amid unverified claims suggesting some Universities might not be fully accredited or recognized by GTEC.
The situation intensified after Professor Goski Alabi, Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university, publicly reminded the recipients to properly use the title “Honoris Causa (HC)” when referring to their honorary degrees, a move seen by some as an attempt to distinguish the honorary awards from academic qualifications.
