Legendary Ghanaian footballer and former Black Stars captain, Stephen Appiah, was awarded the prestigious Continental Sports Icon award at the 9th EMY Africa Awards. The event, held in Ghana over the weekend, celebrated outstanding African talents and their contributions to the continent’s growth and excellence.
Stephen Appiah, known for his dedication and passion on the field, has long been an inspiration to young athletes. His remarkable career and unwavering commitment to football have made him a role model for aspiring sports enthusiasts across Africa.
During his acceptance speech, Appiah shared a heartwarming and inspirational story about a pivotal moment in his career. He revealed how his former teammate, Mohammed Gargo, played a crucial role in giving him his breakthrough opportunity.
In his words, Appiah said: “Gargo faked an injury in the 80th minute so I could experience my first professional game with Udinese Calcio. I came on and scored a goal from 25 yards. The next day, I was in the Italian newspapers, and two days later, I secured my first international contract with Udinese.”
Reflecting on his journey, Appiah expressed profound gratitude to Gargo, saying, “Every time I see him, I bow because I appreciate what he has done for me. Gargo made everything possible.” He also recounted the challenges of transitioning from his hometown of Chorkor to Italy, a country with a vastly different culture, weather, and cuisine.
