Prominent Ghanaian singer and rapper Kweku Darlington, born Emmanuel Kweku Owusu Darlington, has opened up on his willingness to perform on campaign grounds for political parties. He added that he would never consider composing campaign songs in support of any of them.
The Sika Kankan hitmaker made this interesting pronouncement on Class Xtra with Zeal Nana Kweku Bliss on Saturday, August 31, 2024. He was on the Class FM’s entertainment show as part of his promotional strategies for his latest musical project titled Grateful To Your Ex.
According to Kweku Darlington, he will not be bothered to hear his songs played at political rallies as it is a form of promotion of his works. He added that he is ever ready to entertain political fanatics at their gatherings. Nevertheless, he will never consider recording a campaign song for any political party.
Election years in various countries all over the world have seen some popular figures in the countries come up to add their weights to some political sections in their respective countries. We have had some sitting on the fence, while others stay completely away from the political heat.
The likes of Praye, Samini, Daddy Lumba, Agya Koo, Prince David Osei, Kalybos, and many others have thrown their weights behind the New Patriotic Party. The opposition National Democrat Congress also have the likes of Nacee, MzBel, Micheal Adangba, and Mr Beautiful and a host of creatives openly showing their support for the political party. This particular decision has had some reaple effects on the careers and public appeal of these acts.
In 2016, the Ghanaian dancehall heavyweight, Shatta Wale exhibited his smart business card. He was the headline performer at the final political rally of the National Democrat Congress and surprisingly showed up with another electrifying performance at the victory party of the New Patriotic Party. The likes of Kweku Darlington may have drawn inspirations from the brave and intriguing steps of Shatta Wale.
Although musical artistes may only show up on political campaign platforms to deliver their crafts just like they do on other platforms, the fans are yet to be synchronized with their intentions. They feel that it takes more than just the nature of the job to get these talents on such platforms. Hopefully, the Aketesia hitmaker can pull this off and cash out this election season.
