Afrobeat and afropop singer Raphael Camidoh, known famously as Camidoh, recently found himself in hot water after making controversial comments about smoking during an interview on the morning Prime show. The “Sugarcane” hitmaker argued that smoking is not necessarily a bad thing, challenging the common perception that it is harmful. He claimed, “Smoking is not bad in my eyes… Not everything portrayed as negative is actually negative. If it’s bad for you, then it is. The doctors have to determine that.”
Camidoh even went as far as to compare smoking to the smoke created when cooking kenkey, saying, “In my eyes, it’s not bad because I’m telling a story.” These remarks quickly sparked outrage on social media, with many fans and critics alike expressing their disappointment and concern. Some accused Camidoh of potentially influencing his fans to see smoking as acceptable.
However, the award-winning artist took to Twitter ( X) to issue a retraction and apology. In his post, Camidoh admitted that his analogy was a mistake. He wrote, “Hey y’all… I just want to acknowledge that I made an analogy about smoking in a recent interview, and, in hindsight, I realize it was a poor choice and genuinely quite dumb. I’m sincerely sorry for that, and I want to formally retract that statement, along with anything I might have said in its defense. Love, Midoh.
Generally, Camidoh’s apology is an attempt to address the backlash and clarify his stance, showing that even celebrities can make mistakes and learn from them.
