Iconic female rap star, Eno Barony is calling for the introduction of a Female Artiste of the Year category in the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA). She believes that female artists deserve a separate category to compete among themselves.
Speaking on Asaase radio, Eno Barony explained that this new category would help female artists feel more appreciated for their work. “Because that will augment our work and the craft of the females will feel appreciated, and I know it’ll come. A lot of females keep coming into the music scene and that category will surely come; just that we need the push from the media. There should be support for the females, especially those in the rap game because the louder they become, the more the category will be created for them,” she said.
Female artists produce hit tracks and play various roles in the growth of Ghanaian music, but Eno Barony believes they do not receive fair attention. They compete for the same awards in a scheme that male artists predominantly occupy. She argues that a separate Female Artiste of the Year category would give female artists the competition and attention they need.
