Chadwick Boseman’s Family Seeks Court Intervention Over Estate Administration as Legal Dispute Deepens
A fresh legal battle has emerged over the estate of late Hollywood star Chadwick Boseman, with the actor’s brothers formally asking a Los Angeles court to remove his widow, Taylor Simone Ledward, as administrator of his estate, claiming she has failed to carry out court-ordered responsibilities nearly four years after his death.
According to court documents filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court on behalf of Chadwick Boseman’s parents, Leroy and Carolyn Boseman, brothers Derrick Boseman and Kevin Boseman allege that Ledward has not fully distributed the remaining portion of the actor’s estate despite a probate court order issued in October 2022 directing her to do so.
The petition states that Boseman, who died in August 2020 without leaving a will, had his estate divided according to California’s intestacy laws. Under the arrangement, Taylor Simone Ledward inherited 50 percent of the estate, while Boseman’s parents each became entitled to 25 percent.
The family claims that although the court ordered Ledward to distribute the remaining half of the estate to Leroy and Carolyn Boseman on October 4, 2022, the order has yet to be fully executed. The petition argues that she has also failed to file the required petition for discharge and provide documentation confirming the distribution of the estate.
According to the filing, Ledward continues to exercise sole control over the estate, preventing the late actor’s parents from participating in decisions concerning assets that directly affect their interests. The brothers contend that this prolonged administration has deprived their parents of financial resources and denied the family the opportunity to achieve closure following Chadwick Boseman’s passing.
The petition further alleges that the continued delay has caused both financial hardship and emotional distress to Boseman’s elderly parents. It argues that withholding estate assets has become particularly harmful given their age and the support those assets could provide.
As part of the legal action, Derrick and Kevin Boseman are asking the court to require Ledward to explain why she should not be held in contempt for allegedly failing to comply with the 2022 court order. They are also seeking an order compelling the immediate distribution of all remaining estate assets.
The assets identified in the petition reportedly include royalties from Boseman’s work, film residuals, image and intellectual property rights, real estate holdings, personal property, and a previously undisclosed bank account at City National Bank. The filing also seeks a complete financial accounting covering SAG-AFTRA residuals, royalties, bank accounts, and any other estate-related assets to determine whether everything has been properly managed and distributed.
In addition, the Boseman family is requesting that Taylor Simone Ledward be removed as administrator of the estate and replaced with an independent professional fiduciary and forensic accountant. They argue that such an appointment would ensure transparency, investigate any potential estate mismanagement, and identify any assets that may not have been properly accounted for.
At the time of publication, representatives for Taylor Simone Ledward and the Boseman family had not publicly responded to the allegations.
Chadwick Boseman, celebrated worldwide for portraying King T’Challa in Marvel’s groundbreaking Black Panther, became one of Hollywood’s most respected actors through acclaimed performances in films including 42, Marshall, Da 5 Bloods, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He passed away on August 28, 2020, at the age of 43 after a private four-year battle with colon cancer, a diagnosis he kept largely hidden while continuing to deliver some of the most memorable performances of his career.
The latest court filing marks a significant new chapter in the administration of Boseman’s estate and places renewed public attention on the legal complexities surrounding the legacy and assets of one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors.
