Egypt Secures $391 Million UAE-Backed Deal to Unlock One of Africa’s Largest Renewable Energy Corridors

 

Egypt has taken another significant step towards cementing its position as one of Africa’s renewable energy leaders after securing a EGP20 billion (approximately $391 million) investment through an Egyptian-Emirati partnership to strengthen the country’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

The landmark investment will fund the construction of a high-voltage transmission line that will transport electricity generated from the Gulf of Suez’s rapidly expanding wind farms into Egypt’s national power grid, addressing one of the most critical challenges facing the country’s clean energy ambitions.

While large-scale investments in solar and wind farms often dominate headlines, energy experts increasingly recognise that modern transmission infrastructure is equally essential to ensuring renewable electricity reaches homes, businesses and industries efficiently. Egypt’s latest project reflects this changing reality, placing electricity grid expansion at the centre of its long-term energy transition strategy.

The project will be executed by Intelligent Globe Construction (IGC) through a consortium comprising IGC Egypt and IGC UAE. The consortium will undertake the engineering, construction and commissioning of Lot 2 of a 500-kilovolt double-circuit overhead transmission line extending approximately 61.6 kilometres between the Orascom and El Hawamdeya substations.

Once completed, the transmission corridor will evacuate electricity generated by large-scale wind farms in the Gulf of Suez and integrate it into Egypt’s unified national electricity network. The project is expected to improve grid reliability, enhance the country’s ability to absorb growing volumes of renewable electricity, reduce transmission bottlenecks and support future investments in clean energy generation.

The Gulf of Suez has emerged as one of the world’s most attractive onshore wind corridors, drawing billions of dollars in renewable energy investments from international developers and financial institutions. With exceptional wind resources and favourable geographical conditions, the region has become central to Egypt’s strategy of expanding renewable electricity production while reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Over the past decade, Egypt has invested approximately EGP965 billion (around $19 billion) in electricity generation, transmission and distribution infrastructure. These investments have transformed the country’s energy landscape by eliminating chronic electricity shortages, modernising power infrastructure and creating one of Africa’s most ambitious renewable energy programmes.

The Egyptian government aims for renewable energy to contribute 45 percent of the country’s electricity generation by 2028, with wind and solar projects expected to play a dominant role in achieving this target. However, expanding renewable generation alone is no longer sufficient. Without adequate transmission capacity, much of the electricity produced by renewable energy facilities cannot be delivered efficiently to consumers, limiting the benefits of new investments.

The newly approved transmission project therefore represents a crucial link between electricity generation and distribution, ensuring that the country’s expanding portfolio of renewable energy assets can operate at maximum efficiency.

The investment also highlights the growing strategic partnership between Egypt and the United Arab Emirates in developing critical infrastructure across key sectors. Gulf investors have become increasingly active in supporting Egypt’s economic transformation through investments in renewable energy, logistics, transport, real estate and industrial development.

Beyond meeting domestic electricity demand, Egypt is positioning itself as a regional energy hub capable of exporting electricity to neighbouring countries through existing and planned cross-border interconnection projects. Strengthening the national transmission network is considered essential to supporting these regional ambitions and enhancing energy security across North Africa and the wider Middle East.

International development partners are also supporting Egypt’s electricity infrastructure expansion. The European Union and several European financial institutions have committed hundreds of millions of euros to strengthen Egypt’s high-voltage transmission network, enabling the country to integrate an estimated 22 gigawatts of additional renewable energy capacity over the coming years.

The latest Egypt-UAE agreement demonstrates a broader shift taking place across Africa’s energy sector. As countries accelerate investments in renewable energy, attention is increasingly turning towards modernising electricity grids, expanding transmission networks and improving power distribution systems. These less visible investments are becoming just as critical as the construction of solar parks and wind farms in delivering reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity.

For Egypt, the $391 million transmission project is more than an infrastructure investment. It represents another milestone in the country’s long-term vision of becoming a regional clean energy powerhouse while strengthening energy resilience, attracting international investment and supporting sustainable economic growth.

As electricity demand continues to rise across Africa, projects that improve grid capacity and unlock renewable energy potential are expected to become some of the continent’s most strategically important infrastructure investments, positioning Egypt at the forefront of Africa’s clean energy transition.
