Ghana Gold Mine Changes Hands in $66.5 Million Deal as AngloGold Ashanti Takes Full Control of Iduapriem Operations

Ghana Gold Mine Changes Hands in $66.5 Million Deal as AngloGold Ashanti Takes Full Control of Iduapriem Operations

One of Ghana’s largest and most strategically important gold mining operations is set to enter a new chapter following a $66.5 million (A$95 million) transition agreement between South Africa-based AngloGold Ashanti and Australian mining services company Perenti.

The landmark agreement will see AngloGold Ashanti assume direct control of mining operations at its Iduapriem Gold Mine in Ghana’s Western Region, ending an eight-year partnership with Perenti’s subsidiary, African Mining Services (AMS). The transition is expected to strengthen AngloGold Ashanti’s operational oversight while positioning the Australian contractor to unlock fresh capital for future investments across Africa.

Under the terms of the agreement, AMS, through its AMAX joint venture with Ghanaian partner MaxMass, will continue providing surface mining and related support services at the Iduapriem open-pit mine for approximately six months. During this transition period, mining activities will continue uninterrupted before AngloGold Ashanti officially assumes full operational responsibility.

A major component of the transaction involves AngloGold Ashanti purchasing the majority of AMS-owned mining equipment currently deployed at the mine. The equipment sale is expected to generate between A$30 million and A$40 million (approximately US$21 million to US$28 million) for Perenti, providing the company with additional capital to pursue new growth opportunities and strengthen its contract mining business.

The transition marks the conclusion of a successful partnership that began in 2018, during which AMS played a significant role in supporting mining operations at Iduapriem. Over the past eight years, the contractor has contributed to maintaining production efficiency at one of Ghana’s premier gold assets.

Located near Tarkwa in the Western Region, the Iduapriem Gold Mine remains one of AngloGold Ashanti’s flagship operations in Africa. The mine hosts more than 2.1 million ounces of proven and probable gold reserves, making it a critical contributor to the company’s global production portfolio and reinforcing Ghana’s position as one of Africa’s leading gold-producing nations.

Industry observers view the agreement as part of a broader trend among major mining companies seeking greater direct control over strategic assets. By bringing mining operations in-house, AngloGold Ashanti is expected to enhance operational flexibility, improve decision-making, and strengthen oversight of one of its highest-value operations in West Africa.

For Perenti, the transition represents a carefully planned exit from a long-standing contract while creating an opportunity to recycle capital into new projects across the continent.

Perenti Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Vanessa Torres described the agreement as a reflection of the company’s strong operational performance and enduring partnerships across Africa.

She noted that the sale of mining equipment provides certainty for the business while creating an opportunity to reinvest capital into several value-enhancing opportunities currently under consideration.

Perenti Contract Mining President Gabrielle Iwanow also praised the contribution of the AMS workforce, expressing confidence that the team would continue delivering professional mining services until the handover is completed.

She said the AMS team is proud of the performance achieved at Iduapriem over the past eight years and remains committed to ensuring a smooth and successful transition.

The agreement highlights the evolving landscape of Africa’s mining sector, where global producers are increasingly reviewing operational models to balance the use of contract mining services with greater in-house management of strategic assets.

For Ghana, the transition reinforces continued investor confidence in the country’s gold industry while ensuring uninterrupted operations at one of its largest gold mines. As AngloGold Ashanti strengthens its direct control of the Iduapriem Mine and Perenti redirects capital towards new opportunities, the deal represents a significant milestone in the future development of Ghana’s mining sector and the broader African gold industry.
