Accra–Kumasi Expressway Takes Shape as 51km Corridor Is Cleared Ahead of Major Construction Phase

Ghana’s ambitious Accra–Kumasi Expressway project is gathering momentum, with approximately 51 kilometres of the proposed corridor already cleared in preparation for full-scale construction.

The landmark infrastructure initiative, widely regarded as one of the most transformative road projects in the country’s history, is being spearheaded by the Ghana Armed Forces under the direction of President John Dramani Mahama.

Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, announced the latest progress update in a Facebook post on Thursday, May 28, 2026, commending the military for its professionalism and speed in executing the preliminary phase of the project.

“An update on the phenomenal work being undertaken by the Ghana Armed Forces on President Mahama’s transformational Accra-Kumasi Expressway project. So far, about 51km of the entire stretch has been successfully cleared,” Dr. Forson stated.

The Finance Minister also revealed that compensation payments to residents and property owners affected by the project will officially begin in June after final assessments by the appropriate state institutions.

“In June, following assessments by the relevant state agencies, the Ghana Armed Forces will commence the payment of compensation to affected citizens,” he explained.

The Accra–Kumasi Expressway is expected to significantly transform transportation between Ghana’s two largest economic hubs by reducing travel time, improving road safety, and boosting commercial activity along the corridor.

Government officials believe the project will open new economic opportunities for businesses, improve the movement of goods and services, and strengthen national connectivity across several regions.

Dr. Forson described the expressway as a strategic national investment that will play a major role in Ghana’s long-term economic development agenda.

“Steadily, deliberately, and with remarkable professionalism, the foundation is being laid for what will become one of Ghana’s most strategic and economically transformative corridors,” he noted.

“The progress made so far is truly impressive,” the Finance Minister added.

The project is also expected to create jobs during both the construction and operational phases while stimulating growth in communities along the route.

Once completed, the Accra-Kumasi Expressway is expected to ease congestion on one of Ghana’s busiest highways and deliver a modern transportation network capable of supporting increased trade, investment, and regional mobility.

With clearing works advancing steadily and compensation processes set to begin, the project marks another major step in the government’s broader infrastructure and economic transformation agenda.
