“Accra Needs Urgent Re-Engineering Before Flooding Becomes a Major Disaster” — Nathaniel Quaye Warns

Media personality Nathaniel Quaye has called for urgent and decisive action to address the worsening flooding situation in Accra, warning that the capital city risks becoming unsafe during the rainy season if immediate interventions are not implemented.

According to him, the recurring floods after every heavy rainfall are a clear indication that Accra’s infrastructure requires serious re-engineering and long-term urban planning. He stressed that the flooding crisis should no longer be treated as a seasonal inconvenience but rather as a national emergency that demands swift and practical solutions.

Nathaniel Quaye emphasized that authorities must strictly enforce laws against individuals who build on waterways, regardless of their political affiliations, social status, or influence. He noted that the selective application of the law continues to undermine efforts to solve the flooding problem and insisted that accountability must apply equally to all citizens.

He further urged political leaders to prioritize the safety and future of the country over electoral considerations. According to him, true leadership is demonstrated through bold decisions that protect lives and secure sustainable development, even when such decisions may be unpopular.

The media personality also highlighted the urgent need to improve drainage systems across the capital, advocating for wider and stronger drains capable of handling the increasing pressure caused by heavy rains. He added that newly constructed roads must be developed with proper drainage planning to prevent persistent flooding.

Nathaniel Quaye further suggested that Ghana explore modern road construction technologies, including the use of water-absorbing asphalt systems that can help reduce the accumulation of floodwaters on roads.

He cautioned that failure to act immediately could lead to severe consequences for residents of Accra, especially as climate conditions continue to worsen during rainy seasons.

“It is a national emergency that requires action now,” he stressed.
