Senegal President Faye Sacks PM Sonko Amid Deepening Political Rift

Political tensions in Senegal have reached a dramatic turning point after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye dismissed Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and dissolved the country’s government following months of growing disagreements between the two leaders.

The decision, announced through a presidential decree broadcast on national television, officially ended Sonko’s tenure alongside that of all ministers and secretaries of state serving under the administration. The sudden move has sparked widespread political debate across the West African nation and raised fresh concerns about stability within Senegal’s ruling coalition.

Sonko, widely regarded as one of Senegal’s most influential political figures and a strong voice among the country’s youth, reacted calmly to the announcement, stating on social media that he would “sleep with a light heart.” His dismissal came shortly after a tense parliamentary session during which he openly criticised President Faye, exposing deep divisions at the highest level of government.

The fallout marks a major rupture in what was once viewed as one of Senegal’s strongest political alliances. During the 2024 presidential election, Sonko threw his support behind Faye after being barred from contesting due to a defamation conviction. Their campaign slogan, “Diomaye is Sonko, Sonko is Diomaye,” symbolised a united political movement that ultimately defeated former President Macky Sall in a historic election victory.

Both men had emerged from prison only days before the election, making their rise to power one of the most remarkable political stories in Senegal’s recent history. However, relations between the pair reportedly deteriorated over time, with disagreements over leadership style and the direction of the ruling Pastef party becoming increasingly public.

Reports indicate that President Faye had expressed concern over what he described as Sonko’s “excessive personalisation” of the governing party, while Sonko accused the president of failing to defend him against mounting criticism. The tensions eventually spilled into the public arena, culminating in Sonko’s removal from office.

The political crisis comes at a difficult economic period for Senegal. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the country’s public debt has climbed to approximately 132% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP), placing significant pressure on the government. The IMF has also suspended its $1.8 billion lending programme with Senegal, further intensifying concerns over the nation’s economic outlook.

Meanwhile, supporters of Sonko have begun expressing their dissatisfaction. Hundreds of students reportedly took to the streets of Dakar shortly after the announcement, demonstrating in support of the former prime minister and calling for political accountability.

As uncertainty grows, attention is now turning to President Faye’s next move, particularly regarding the appointment of a new prime minister and the future direction of Senegal’s government. Political analysts believe the unfolding situation could reshape the country’s political landscape and test the stability of the administration at a time of mounting economic and social challenges.
