Nigeria Moves to Repatriate Citizens From South Africa Amid Escalating Xenophobic Attacks

The Nigerian government has announced plans to begin the voluntary repatriation of its citizens living in South Africa as fears grow over a fresh wave of xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.

The decision follows increasing reports of harassment, intimidation, and violent attacks against African migrants in parts of South Africa, sparking concern among governments across the continent.

According to Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, at least 130 Nigerians have already registered to return home voluntarily, with authorities expecting the number to rise in the coming days.

The minister disclosed that the Nigerian government is coordinating with relevant agencies and South African authorities to ensure the safety of its citizens while also preparing for possible evacuation flights for those willing to leave the country.

Rising Tensions Trigger Fear Among Migrants

Recent weeks have witnessed a sharp rise in anti-immigrant sentiment in South Africa, with several groups accusing foreign nationals of taking jobs, increasing crime, and placing pressure on public services.

The growing hostility has reportedly led to protests, threats against migrant-owned businesses, and isolated attacks in some communities, causing panic among African migrants living and working in the country.

Videos circulating widely on social media have further intensified concerns, showing disturbing scenes of migrants being confronted, harassed, and threatened over their immigration status.

Nigerian officials say the safety of their citizens can no longer be ignored.

“Nigerian lives and businesses must not continue to be put at risk,” Odumegwu-Ojukwu stated, stressing that the government remains committed to protecting Nigerians abroad.

Diplomatic Pressure Mounts

As tensions escalate, Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s acting High Commissioner to formally express its concerns over the attacks.

A diplomatic meeting between officials from both countries is expected to take place on Monday, with Nigeria reportedly warning that continued violence against its citizens could negatively affect bilateral relations if urgent measures are not implemented.

Authorities are also compiling updated data on Nigerians residing in South Africa as part of preparations for the voluntary evacuation exercise.

Other African Countries Also Alarmed

The growing wave of xenophobic incidents has not only affected Nigerians. Citizens from other African countries have also reportedly faced harassment and intimidation.

Ghana has already advised its nationals in South Africa to remain cautious, maintain a low profile, and in some cases temporarily close their businesses for safety reasons.

Ghanaian authorities also summoned South Africa’s envoy after a viral video surfaced showing a Ghanaian national being aggressively questioned about his immigration status.

The incidents have reignited concerns about regional migration tensions and the recurring challenge of xenophobia in South Africa, which has witnessed several outbreaks of anti-foreigner violence over the years.

Broader International Attention

The situation is unfolding at a time when South Africa is also facing growing international scrutiny over other political and social issues.

Recently, Donald Trump drew criticism after amplifying controversial claims about a so-called “white genocide” in South Africa during debates surrounding the country’s land reform policies.

South African officials strongly rejected the remarks, describing them as misleading and inflammatory.

As diplomatic engagements continue, many African governments are closely monitoring developments, hoping urgent interventions can prevent further violence and ensure the safety of migrants across the region.
