Ford Unveils One-of-a-Kind Ranger Bearing Nelson Mandela’s Signature to Power Children’s Charity in South Africa
In a powerful fusion of heritage, innovation, and social impact, Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa has unveiled a truly unique creation, a bespoke Ford Ranger Wildtrak X, meticulously built from the ground up and adorned with the iconic signature of Nelson Mandela.
This one-of-a-kind pickup is more than a vehicle; it is a symbol of legacy, purpose, and partnership. Donated to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF), the special-edition bakkie will serve as a high-impact fundraising asset, with proceeds from its sale dedicated to advancing child welfare and community development initiatives across South Africa.
A Tribute That Drives Impact
Crafted at Ford’s renowned Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria, the Wildtrak X stands as a moving tribute to Mandela’s enduring legacy. Its most distinctive feature, Mandela’s signature elegantly stitched into the interior, embodies a deep symbolic connection between the automaker and the humanitarian values championed by “Madiba.”
“The symbolism of Madiba’s signature reflects the spirit of our partnership with the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund,” said Neale Hill, President of Ford Motor Company Africa. “We believe in creating generational impact. Like Madiba and the Fund, we are committed to sustained efforts that drive meaningful, long-term change. It is both an honour and a privilege to carry this signature and contribute to South Africa’s future.”
Honouring a Historic Bond
The launch of this extraordinary vehicle also rekindles a historic relationship between Ford Motor Company and Mandela himself. Notably, Mandela’s first car, a 1937 Ford V8, played a role during his early years of activism, making this initiative a poignant full-circle moment in both automotive and national history.
A Century-Long Commitment to South Africa
Ford’s roots in South Africa stretch back more than 100 years, with its Silverton plant continuing to play a pivotal role in its global production network. The company remains a dominant force in the local automotive industry, having sold approximately 34,628 vehicles in 2025 alone.

At the heart of this success is the Ford Ranger, one of South Africa’s most popular bakkies. With 25,465 units sold in 2025, the Ranger retained its position as the country’s second-best-selling pickup, underscoring its enduring appeal despite a marginal year-on-year dip.
Beyond manufacturing, Ford has deepened its social commitment by providing 19 vehicles to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, supporting its outreach and operational efforts nationwide.
Advancing Mandela’s Vision for Children
Founded by Nelson Mandela, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund remains a cornerstone in the fight for child protection and development in South Africa.
“Thirty years after its founding, our mission remains as urgent as ever,” said Dr. Linda Ncube-Nkomo, CEO of the Fund. “Partnerships like this demonstrate the powerful role the private sector can play in safeguarding children and strengthening communities.”
Driving Forward with Purpose
This landmark initiative reflects Ford’s broader commitment to social responsibility, proving that its impact extends far beyond the assembly line.
“This is about honouring Madiba’s legacy by investing in the well-being of children,” Hill emphasized. “For over a century, Ford has been part of South Africa’s story. We believe businesses have a responsibility to contribute meaningfully to the communities they serve.”
With this extraordinary Ranger Wildtrak X, Ford is not just building vehicles, it is driving hope, legacy, and lasting change across generations.
