Independent Candidate Hopeful for the Assin North Constituency, Elkanah Frederick Ayittey, has initiated a community water project at Assin Agave following concerns raised by residents over the growing challenge of access to clean water.
According to Mr. Ayittey, illegal mining activities in the area have severely affected the community’s main water source, the Pra River, leaving residents with limited options for safe drinking water.
Speaking during a visit to the community, Mr. Ayittey explained that many residents are now forced to rely on contaminated river water or purchase sachet water, which has become expensive for the predominantly farming population.
“Water is a basic necessity of life, and it is worrying that many communities are struggling to access clean and safe drinking water because their main source has been polluted,” he said.
Mr. Ayittey noted that during a meeting with residents of Assin Agave, community members proposed the construction of a well as a practical and immediate solution to the water crisis.
As part of his support to the community, he donated several bags of sachet water to help residents temporarily cope with the situation while longer-term solutions are pursued.
Demonstrating his commitment to addressing the challenge, Mr. Ayittey also performed a sod-cutting ceremony to officially commence the construction of the well, which is expected to provide potable water for Assin Agave and surrounding communities.
He emphasized that leadership must begin with listening to the needs of the people and responding with practical solutions that improve their lives.
“My hope is that everyone in the community feels a sense of belonging and support. I am committed to ensuring that no one is left behind, and I will continue to do my best to serve the people of Assin North,” he stated.
Residents of the community expressed appreciation for the initiative and expressed optimism that the well project will help ease their long-standing water challenges.
