King Charles III to Host Nigeria’s First UK State Visit in 37 Years

King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to host Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a landmark state visit to the United Kingdom, the first by a Nigerian leader in 37 years, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu will be received as guests of the King at Windsor Castle from 18 to 19 March, marking a significant diplomatic milestone in UK–Nigeria relations. The last Nigerian state visit to the UK took place in 1989, when then military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida met Queen Elizabeth II during a four-day official trip.

State visits are among the highest forms of diplomatic engagement, blending royal ceremony with strategic soft-power diplomacy. Through the pageantry of royal hospitality, they underscore the importance the UK places on its relationship with visiting nations and leaders.

Although this will be President Tinubu’s first formal state visit since assuming office in 2023 following a disputed election, he has previously engaged with King Charles III. In September 2024, the Nigerian president and first lady were received at Buckingham Palace, and later held bilateral discussions with the King on the sidelines of the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

Unlike routine diplomatic engagements, a state visit is designed to elevate bilateral relations through ceremonial grandeur, typically featuring a carriage procession, a state banquet, and high-level political meetings with UK leaders. While the full programme for the March visit has not yet been disclosed, it is expected to reflect the growing strategic and economic ties between the two countries.

The visit comes at a time of strengthening diplomatic and commercial relations. Trade between the UK and Nigeria exceeded £8 billion in the year to October, according to official figures, positioning Nigeria as one of Britain’s most important partners in Africa. In 2024, both countries signed a new trade and investment partnership aimed at expanding business opportunities and deepening economic cooperation.

King Charles III has a longstanding personal connection with Nigeria, a fellow Commonwealth nation. He has previously expressed his fondness for Nigerian culture, including Pidgin English and Afrobeats music. Before ascending the throne, he visited Nigeria four times as Prince of Wales, in 1990, 1999, 2006, and 2018, with Queen Camilla accompanying him on the most recent visit.

In 2023, the King’s Trust International, formerly known as the Prince’s Trust, officially launched operations in Nigeria, unveiling initiatives focused on tackling youth unemployment and supporting entrepreneurship.

The upcoming state visit further reinforces Nigeria’s strategic importance to the UK and signals a renewed commitment to deepening political, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
