Nigeria Poised to Lead Africa’s Automotive Transition as Innoson Nears Completion of Landmark CNG and EV Plant
Nigeria is strengthening its claim as a future powerhouse in Africa’s automotive industry as Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing (IVM) moves closer to commissioning a landmark factory dedicated to compressed natural gas (CNG) trucks and electric vehicles. The development signals a major leap toward cleaner transportation, industrial self-reliance, and large-scale local manufacturing on the continent.
Speaking on the project, Executive Chairman of the Innoson Group, Innocent Chukwuma, disclosed that the new facility is set to rank among the largest CNG vehicle manufacturing plants in the world. Once operational, the factory will have the capacity to produce up to 3,000 vehicles annually across six distinct categories, serving both domestic demand and the wider African market.
Equipped with advanced manufacturing technologies and modern production lines, the plant is expected to be completed within the coming months. Its launch will mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s industrial journey, particularly as governments across Africa accelerate the shift away from petrol and diesel toward gas-powered and electric alternatives.
Chukwuma reiterated his long-standing commitment to local production, describing Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing as one of Africa’s largest private-sector employers. He noted that the company already supports thousands of Nigerian families and is preparing for a major expansion of its workforce as the new factory comes on stream.
“In 2026 alone, we plan to employ about 2,000 additional workers following the establishment of this new factory,” Chukwuma said. He emphasized that the expansion reflects his vision of sustainable industrial growth driven by Nigerian skills, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Empowering Youth Through Industrial Training
Beyond vehicle production, the new plant will serve as a hub for technical skills development. Innoson plans to launch a structured training programme aimed at equipping young Nigerians with practical, industry-ready manufacturing skills. Participants will either be absorbed into Innoson’s workforce or certified to pursue careers across Nigeria’s growing industrial sector.

According to Chukwuma, the initiative is designed to productively engage young people while addressing broader social and economic challenges. He stressed that job creation and skills acquisition are essential tools for reducing insecurity and building a resilient industrial base.
As Africa increasingly embraces cleaner mobility solutions, Innoson’s expansion places Nigeria at the centre of the continent’s next-generation automotive evolution. The project is expected to have far-reaching implications for regional supply chains, employment, technology transfer, and Africa’s drive toward industrial self-sufficiency.
